Information Governance is about information security - this means protecting data.
There is no choice about whether pharmacies put measures in place or not. This is a legal obligation governed under Freedom to Information Act 2000, Data Protection Act 1998 and Common Law duty of confidence. Pharmacies and their staff are also subject to professional codes of conduct that also refer to confidentiality, records management and information security.
Compliance to Information Governance is part of proving pharmacies have in place national standards of data protection. If compliance is not reached and a data breach results, contractors open thems elves up to prosecution and fine of up to £500,000.
The Information Commissioner can apply the new powers granted this year under the DPA Act.
