As a result of the multi-disciplinary audit carried out by community pharmacists in Hertfordshire in 2009-10 and the continued focus by all contributors to the local health economy on the QIPP agenda a plethora of information is now available to support the prescribing and dispensing of Specials.
It is desirable that whenever a new special is prescribed the GP is contacted if
the item is particularly high cost (over £100).
there is a licensed alternative.
there is an unlicensed alternative that may be more cost effective eg: crushing tablets.
