Community Pharmacy Wales - CPW - is based in Cardiff Bay close to the Welsh Assembly. The role of Community Pharmacy Wales is to represent the interests of over 700 community pharmacies in Wales. Contractors in Wales receive general advice from the PSNC on matters relating to negotiations, pricing and legal issues but all matters that relate specifically to Wales are now dealt with by CPW.

BRIEF SYNOPSIS

PSNC has a long history of supporting Welsh Pharmacy Contractors under the auspices of the PSNC's Welsh Committee, the 'Welsh Central Pharmaceutical Committee'. Following devolution and the formation of the National Assembly for Wales, the Welsh Committee has been called upon to liaise more with the Assembly and negotiate on behalf of Welsh Contractors.

In November 2001, the Welsh Central Pharmaceutical Committee changed it's name to Community Pharmacy Wales to reflect more clearly the Committee's role.

In December 2002, Pharmacy contractors in Wales voted unanimously for a single representative committee, Community Pharmacy Wales (CPW), supported by 3 regional committees in North Wales, Mid & West Wales and South & East Wales. CPW outlined the proposed new structure to pharmacy contractors at a meeting in Llandrindod Wells in October followed by a postal ballot of all pharmacy contractors in Wales.

In 2003 along with the new structure a letter was distributed by the Welsh Assembly Government confirming the position of Community Pharmacy Wales as the negotiating body on behalf of pharmacy contractors in Wales.
